How to Back Up Your Mac®

Priceless family photos, irreplaceable projects or a complete iTunes® library would be painful to lose. What would you do if your Mac computer was stolen or damaged and you lost these files? Spare yourself the heartache and invest some time and money in a backup option that will protect the files you need, no matter what. Here are our top 5 tips on what you need to know when backing up your data on your Mac:

  1. Time Machine®

This is Apple’s® built-in backup feature for Mac OS X®. It is a built in backup application that keeps up-to-date copies of your files on a hard drive destination in order to restore them at a later time. It requires an external drive that is connected to a Thunderbolt, FireWire or USB port on your computer. Though you can’t rely on Time Machine for a complete full-system backup, it is easily accessible, easy to complete and a great way to maintain regular backups.

  2. Cloning

Should something happen to your Mac, having a clone of your entire system is a very desirable option. Thankfully, OS X has a built in option for creating cloned images of your computer’s drive called Disk Utility. There are also options to pay for third party utilities which provide several other options and allow you to schedule backups.

  3. Cloud Storage

Whether using iCloud® or another cloud service provider, utilizing cloud storage is a great way to back up your Mac computer. With a cloud service, your files are safe regardless of what happens to your computer. There are also many thorough options for cloud storage with services such as Crash Plan or Live drive that can save more than just tiny subsets of your data like Dropbox. The only major downsides to cloud storage options are the amount of time it can take to complete a backup and restore a full system as well as the cost for sufficient space.

  4. Indestructible and Offsite Hard Drives

Should a drastic disaster occur such as a fire, or flood, a backup solution that is indestructible or located in a completely different location is a life-saver. It may be annoying to back up your files and take the drive to another location, but saving your files is always worth the hassle. There are also fireproof and waterproof disks sold, however these are large and not safe against theft.

  5. Backup Your Backup

The best way to ensure your files are safe is to not rely on only one back up method. Whether you want to use a Cloud and Time Machine, or the Bootable Backup and an offsite hard drive, it’s important to be prepared for the worst. By providing yourself with several easy backup methods you can be consistent with, you are ensuring the safety of your files as well as your peace of mind.

Mac® vs. PC: Which One Should You Buy?

Why You Should Consider a Mac

There are many aspects of purchasing a computer that can make the hunt quite challenging. There are many great options, however, it’s vital to consider the factors that make a computer safe, reliable and user-friendly. Your first decision as a computer shopper should be: Mac or PC?

We took a look at considerations such as safety, usability, reliability, affordability and re-sale value. Take a look at our suggestions:

Safety:
Macs have long been considered the safer option, but what is the reality? Both PC and Mac computers are vulnerable to malware. However, due to the number and variety of PCs available, PCs are attacked by hackers more frequently than Mac computers.

PCs are sold by many companies including Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and Lenovo amongst others. Though there are many options and varieties of PCs, this promotes a less-controlled operating system. Because Mac computers are created, sold and updated by Apple®, they are able to maintain more stability with the operating system and security of Mac computers. Apple also optimizes their OS® to function with Mac components and, as a result, Mac computers typically crash less than PCs.

Usability:
There are many factors that contribute to a computer’s usability. Part of the answer to the Mac vs. PC question is, what do you personally want in your computer?

Mac computers are known for their beautiful designs in addition to offering better physical components such as nicer screens due to their high resolution retina display. The average PC does not compare in its design or screen. Mac computers also offer iTunes®, which is one of the most convenient ways to enjoy music and movies on a computer. Though PCs do not offer iTunes, they do have a more thorough collection of gaming options and are sometimes considered the better gaming choice. Some PCs can also offer their user flexibility; however, the flexibility that comes with purchasing a PC also leaves it open to more vulnerabilities.

Macs are easier to incorporate into daily routines and anyone’s lifestyle thanks to the strengthened ties between Mac OS and iOS® devices such as your iPhone® and iPad®. iOS users now have the ability to start a note or email on their iPhone or iPad, and continue working on their Mac without taking additional steps to synchronize or save anything thanks to the new Hand-Off® feature from Apple.

Reliability:
When it comes down to the integrity of the software, Mac computers come with software that is specifically designed for Mac products. When purchasing a PC, understand that the software developed for the PC is generic and applied to any of the hundreds of PC models available.

Mac computers are considered reliable due to the incredible Mac OS operating system as well as the superb customer support offered on a Mac computer. Again, due to Apple providing everything for the Mac computer, you are provided with a thorough and all-inclusive computer experience.

Affordability and Re-Sale Value:
It is easy to find cheap PCs; however, these options do not offer the quality that comes with a Mac computer. There is no such thing as a cheaply-made Mac computer. A quality PC and Mac with similar specs will be comparable in price.

However, Apple computers hold their value much more – safety, usability and reliability. Additionally, people are attracted to the modern design associated with Macs. Because of these factors, Mac computers are considered a premium product. However, owning a premium Mac computer doesn’t have to come at a premium price. Mac computers are known for their longevity thanks to their stable operating systems and quality build, and buying a pre-owned Mac computer is a great option for the consumer who is not interested in getting a brand new Mac. Experimac’s prices on pre-owned Mac computers are often 60% lower than the retail price. On the other hand, purchasing a used PC is not recommended because they do not offer longevity and reliability of a Mac computer.

When you have considered all of your options, weighed the pros and cons, and ready to purchase, we are confident you’ll go with a Mac. If a pre-owned Mac is your chosen route, don’t hesitate to call or visit your local Experimac.

iPhone® in Water: Step-by-Step Guide

Whether it falls in the pool, a puddle or maybe even the toilet, dropping your iPhone® in water is something that’s happened to the best of us and is often fixable. Take a look at this step-by-step guide with the best steps to take should this happen to you:

  1. Don’t Panic
Fight the temptation to panic should you drop your phone in water. Get the phone out of the water right away! Keep in mind that this happens all the time and this is reparable. By panicking, you may fail to take the best measures in preventing further damage to your iPhone®. Damage to your phone can increase the longer it takes you to dry off your phone. The longer it sits in the water, the more time you’re allowing water to get in through the phone’s seams.
  2. Turn Off and Wipe Off Your Phone
Liquids can short-circuit electronic devices due to conductivity, so once you’ve picked up your phone, turn it off immediately. Don’t turn it back on, charge it or connect it to anything until you’ve allowed at least 48 hours for it to dry out. Be sure to wipe it off with an absorbent scratch-free cloth, paying special attention to the headphone jack and charge port. Remove and dry the SIM card and tray if your phone happens to be an AT&T/GSM model, and allow 48 hours before reinserting.
  3. Try Rice
Placing your phone in a sealable plastic bag or other conainer filled with 4 cups of uncooked instant rice could possibly help your phone dry off. Uncooked instant rice, or silica gel, have been known to absorb liquids in phones, without harming the phone. The grains of rice or pieces of silica are too large to enter the phone and damage it; however, they have been known to assist in absorbing liquids.
  4. Check Warranty Options
Be sure to check your warranty once your iPhone® has dried. Unfortunately, liquid damage is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty nor is it covered by AppleCare® coverage. Some iPhone® buyers invest in third party warranty options such as Asurion or SquareTrade, which can offer coverage for submersion or spills depending on the policy you have. Try to file a claim to replace your damaged iPhone® regardless of the phone’s condition.
  5. Visit Experimac – Liquid Cleaning
If, after exhausting these steps, you still find your iPhone® is damaged, consider liquid cleaning as your last attempt to save it. Come by and visit your local Experimac store today where we are able to offer you many iPhone® repair services including liquid cleaning. Our liquid cleaning service is safe, effective, and offered for many Apple® products. Jim and Jamie Spisak Featured in Dallas Morning News

Jim Spisak and his daughter, Jamie, were recently featured in The Dallas Morning News.

Jim Spisak, 59, and Jamie Spisak, 28, both left careers in corporate America to launch a business of their own. Last month the father-daughter duo will opened their Experimac franchise location at 4709 W. Parker Rd., in Plano.

Experimac is a one-of-a-kind retail storefront concept that specializes in sales of pre-owned Apple® computers and devices; repair of laptops, phones and tablets; trade-ins of existing devices; system updates; and sales of accessories.

Such life-changing career decisions were once considered fraught with uncertainty, but in today’s economy, the reaction is much more likely to be, “Good for you! I wish I was doing the same.”

And apparently, more people are doing just that. According to a Harris Poll conducted in April of 1,553 unemployed people, nearly one-fifth had quit their jobs due to an improved economy and labor market. Staffing firm Express Employment Professionals commissioned the poll.

It might come as a surprise, but each month almost three million Americans voluntarily leave their jobs. According to the most recent figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 2.7 million “voluntary quits” in September. The number of quits has held steady between 2.7 million and 2.8 million for the past 13 months after increasing steadily since the end of the recession.

“It’s a great feeling to say that we are going to be running a family business after both my daughter and I came out of corporate America,” Spisak said.

Experimac in Cape Coral, FL

Kevin Lynn recently opened a new Experimac franchise in Cape Coral, FL. His store opening was recently featured in the Cape Coral Daily Breeze.

Just before the holidays, Kevin Lynn brought Experimac, a new retail and repair store for Apple products, to Cape Coral. Experimac refreshes pre-owned iMac computers, MacBook laptops, iPhone and iPad mobile devices, ensures that the products are in perfect working condition and sells them at a much reduced price compared to new Apple products.

Everything it sells is warrantied for 90 days and if Experimac can’t fix it, it will replace it. The business also repairs and upgrades Apple products, including the need for mobile device screen repair.

While sales and repairs are a core part of the business, it also purchases pre-owned Apple products and takes them as trade-ins towards other products.

Accessories are also a major part of the business. From phone and tablet cases, to laptop cases, adaptors and cables, Experimac has most of what the average customer needs.

Through Experimac, located at 1031 Santa Barbara Blvd., Lynn is bringing the newest concept from industry veteran United Franchise Group to serve customers throughout the Cape Coral area, including Fort Myers, Punta Gorda, Lehigh Acres, Estero Island, Pine Island.

Experimac Shiloh, IL Featured in St. Louis Post Dispatch

Experimac Shiloh, IL

Scott Markovich of Experimac Shiloh, IL was recently featured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The article talks about Scott his move from retail and restaurant management, to an Experimac Franchisee.

Scott Markovich is bringing the rapidly expanding concept Experimac to Illinois in early November. His Shiloh location will serve Southern Illinois and the St. Louis area. Providing pre-owned computers and devices; repair and upgrade services for laptops, phones, and tablets; trade-ins of existing devices; and sales of accessories and software for Apple® devices, Experimac make available heavily in demand devices at costs far below their retail value.

Markovich, a retail and restaurant manager for more than 15 years sought a career change that would grant him the autonomy to be his own boss. Recognizing the demand for Apple® devices yet aware that a large percentage of the population could not afford what they cost when purchased new, Markovich identified a new career direction. But it wasn’t until he came upon the new concept Experimac that he had known he had found an ironclad opportunity to transfer that insight into a career.

“The demand for Apple® devices has never been greater but because of the demand the costs to obtain them at retail are often beyond the reach of most consumers,” said Markovich. “By making them available used, more people can gain access to them than ever before. Experimac makes this possible, backed by a reputation of excellence.”

The newest addition to the United Franchise Group family of brands, a system with over 30 years of franchise experience, Experimac has grown precipitously since the opening of the first franchised location in March. For Markovich, Experimac provides an opportunity to create a legacy for his family.
